Kids love to draw and paint, so what could be better than getting your child set up with a computer based art program? No mess or spills, no costly materials to buy and no stacks of artwork to clutter up the house. It seems perfect, until you actually try to do it.
If you try to teach your child how to use Photoshop or GIMP, the frustration becomes apparent. Kids want to just get in there and draw, but that's not possible with other programs. The learning curve drives the creative spark away. If all this sounds familiar to you, Tux Paint is just the thing you need. It's simple, easy to understand and fun.
After booting up Tux Paint, you can just let your child get to it. The way the program is laid out is really simple, and there is basically no way to misunderstand it. Everything in life should be this simple. The palette and tools are clearly defined and everything is always at your child's fingertips; no complicated toolbars and submenus here! Yet the screen is definitely not cluttered. Awesome design.
Kids are curious by nature; this is how they learn. Most of us would rather not have our computers become that type of learning experience for our children, and surprisingly Tux Paint provides an answer. Enabling full screen or cursor grab modes keeps your kid in the paint program and out of important system settings and files. Tux Paint is a reasonable option for schools and daycares because of these thoughtful security settings.
Even as an adult, you yourself will be tempted to play around with Tux Paint. There are 50 different types of brushes, plus loads more filters in the 'magic' section, making the possibilities endless. Everything also has a special sound effect when used. The eraser makes the sound of an eraser on a whiteboard, the toothpaste brush sounds like toothpaste being squeezed from the tube. The extra added cause and effect makes this paint program engaging for even the smallest of kids.
If your kid doesn't understand filenames and save directories, does that mean that they can't enjoy Tux Paint? Absolutely not! Tux Paint makes such things automatic; all your kid needs to do to save a picture is to hit the 'save' button and Tux Paint takes are of the rest. If you would like to decide where files are saved for yourself, just boot up the Tux Paint Config tool and specify.
Overall, Tux Paint is a must download for any parent or kid at heart. The program is of such good quality that it could easily be sold on a commercial basis, but thanks to the generosity of the creators, it is free as in freedom.
